We were lucky enough to chat with X-Factor winner Isaiah Firebrace, the 17-year old singer whose rich vocals have earned him the job of representing Australia in this past weekend's Eurovision competition.
What are the foods of your childhood?
Lollies - especially sour lollies. Cornflakes, Coco Pops, lasagne and Happy Meals. I also loved Aunty Carmen's toast growing up. Different foods really remind me of my childhood.
What are your all time favourite foods today?
Chicken Risotto, pizza, prawns, any type of stew or soup and I'm currently loving Mexican food. I also have a huge love of Tom Yum Soup. That is my go to meal at the moment.
What do you think are the best fruits and vegetables?
Berries, kiwifruit, bananas, lemons, pineapple, rockmelon, sweet cherry tomatoes, snowpeas, cauliflower, carrots - I am a huge lover of fresh fruit and veggies and try to eat as many as possible.
What foods do you dislike? Can you explain why?
I don't like tuna, sardines, salmon or anchovies which is strange because I like other seafood and prawns are my favourite. I don't really like beetroot either because the taste doesn't match the texture! I also really dislike mangoes. I really don't like runny eggs. I just can't eat them.
What are your favourite desserts?
Ice-cream. Cheesecake, chocolate brownies and apple crumble... but my favourite is always ice-cream. Cookies and cream is my go to favourite but I love lots of flavours.
What do you eat for breakfast on a typical day? What is your ideal breakfast?
On a typical day I eat three pancakes, smothered in maple syrup and topped with berries and bananas. If I'm in a cooking mood, I love doing a big fry up of bacon, eggs (not runny), sausage, tomato, melted tasty cheese and herbs and spices on bruschetta - I call this my gourmet breakfast. Other days it is just a muesli bar on the run.
What is your favourite holiday or festival? How do you celebrate it, and what do you eat?
My favourite is Christmas and I love having a seafood lunch with a BBQ. It really represents our family getting together.
Where did you grow up? What are some typical foods to be found there?
I grew up in a small country town in New South Wales, Australia. We are known for our bakeries so I grew up eating a lot of pastries and pies. We also barbecue a lot in the country.
Where else have you lived? Where do you live now? What was/is the food like? Do you like it?
I've only just moved to Melbourne so I am trying lots of new food. My favourite at the moment is Mexican.
It’s 2 am, it’s been a wild night, and you’re just getting home. What are you eating?
I would probably go straight to bed but if there is pizza around I would definitely be eating pizza.
Imagine your fridge. What is inside?
Cranberry juice, lots of fruit and veggies, dips, and definitely ice-cream in the freezer.
Do you like to cook? What do you typically make?
I love cooking but do not have much of a chance these days. My favourite thing to make is spaghetti bolognese! I think mine is the best!!
What do you think are the best summer foods?
Best summer foods.... seafood by the beach definitely. Pineapple, berries, smoothies and fresh juice. Hot fish and chips by the sea!!
What do you crave when the weather is cold?
Hot soup or stew. Pumpkin soup or brothy stews!
Ultimate sandwich?
Easy one; toasted chicken, avocado, tasty cheese, basil, cherry tomatoes, onion, mayonnaise, salt and pepper with a pinch of seasoning.
Beverages of choice?
Smoothies, juice, Red Bull, chai latte, iced tea, cranberry juice and hot chocolates. I swap around all the time.
What is the best pizza topping?
Have to be pepperoni with extra basil, extra tomato base and extra cheese - straight out of the oven!!
What is the most interesting thing you’ve tried while traveling?
Green tea ice-cream in Bali. It was the best!
What is the best thing you can remember eating?
Green Tea ice-cream! I dream about it.
What do you put on toast?
Salted butter with Vegemite...and it has to be hot, and soggy from the butter.
If you were throwing a party, what would you serve?
Salt and Vinegar chips, lollies, party pies and sausage rolls and definitely pizza... and fruit punch!
When you hear the word “family”, what food comes to mind?
Definitely stew - our family has always eaten a lot of stew. My dad and cooked stew and all of my relatives would always make stew.
If you could recommend any restaurant, cafe, or bar in the world, which one would it be?
Mel's Diner in LA. I have eaten there a few times and the banana milkshake was the best I've tasted.
If it’s just you for dinner, what do you make?
If I'm really hungry and on my own I will just order a large pizza and sit and chill.
Can you share a memory with me- any memory- that somehow involves food?
One day when I was about 13 I had a maths test so I purposely put mouldy butter on my toast to make myself sick. I went to school and felt sick so I got sent home. Probably not the best idea I ever had but it worked at the time!
